Between Eva Mendes licking her toes in the May issue and the much-awaited all black July issue, Vogue Italia has received a lot of attention recently. I think it’s a great move by editor-in-chief Franca Sozzani to use all these models who are usually passed at castings because they supposedly “not inspirational”. One look at these women and you are left with no doubt that they belong in the fashion world. Moreover, people are not only being exposed to more black models, but also to Vogue Italia. People focus more on American and French Vogue, but Vogue Italia has had amazing shoots and editorials over the years. check out the September 2006 cover (who just so happens to have Mimi Roche on the cover):

Dayana Mendoza is now Miss Venezuela Universe. Before being crowned, she was a finalist in the Elite Model Look International contest back in 2001. She signed with Elite Model Management that year and modeled for Versace and Roberto Cavalli, among others, all over the world. She is no longer on the site though, but we did find this old jewelery ad.

Last week I wrote about Taylor Momsen from Gossip Girl joining IMG Models and now Byrdie Bell, real life NYC socialite and actress, is joining Ford Models. Many socialites are signed to agencies, but most are with IMG. Byrdie’s already been on several Vogue covers so Ford won’t have too much work ahead of them.

While one socialite joins a modeling agency, another joins Gossip Girl. Tinsley Mortimer was already mentioned by name on the show and now she will make an appearence next season. Apart from being a socialite, Tinsley is also a designer and a contributing author for the The Park Avenue Diet.

I’m in love with this dress, but I’m afraid I’d end up looking like a picnic blanket.

Julia Restoin-Roitfeld is our new favorite ‘It girl’. A recent Parsons grad, she is the daugther Carine Roitfeld who just happens to be the editor-in-chief of French Vogue. The fact that she has style and grace is inevitable and expected. She’s also the face of Tom Ford’s fragrance Black Orchid. Why do we love her? She’s a real person not just a socialite - she once said if she had to choose between homework and the Marc Jacobs show she wouldn’t hesitate in answering: “The homework comes first.” She is also a New York girl at heart because she believes that people are more liberal in their clothing choices - “People have such fun with their clothes here and they are open to new ideas.” So because of all this and the fact that we love her style, Julia is our “It girl”.

Gossip Girl clearly has a large following, including yours truly, and it’s brought quick fame to it’s young actors and actresses. The latest to receive praise is Taylor Momsen, aka Jenny Humphrey, who has been signed to IMG Models. Even though her rise to fame has been a short ride so far she obviously shows potential. At 14, she is one of the youngest models ever signed on to the company.

Anna Wintour has been named Officer of the Civil Division of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire for services to British journalism and British fashion in the USA. In case you live under a rock, she is the editor-in-chief of Vogue in the US since 1988 (and she also edited British Vogue before this) and yes, she was Lauren Weisberger’s inspiration for Miranda Priestley in The Devil Wears Prada.

I admire her so much. I know it’s a weird thing to read since most people hate her, either because she’s a harsh and nearly intolerable boss or because she wears fur, but I think she could be one of the people I could learn about fashion and fashion journalisn from the most. Love her or hate her, no one can deny her power and influence in the industry. And let’s be honest, she’d be the boss you love to hate.
